Repower HKers: Forum x Hong Kong Fair 11-12/6/2022, London
The Association of Overseas Hong Kong Media Professionals CIC (AOHKMP), co-founded by Dr. Stephen Ng, Professor Joseph Lian and Chris Wong Chun-yin, will be officially registered in June 2022 in the United Kingdom. The AOHKMP will operate as a social enterprise with the goal of bringing together media professionals from Hong Kong who moved to the UK and other parts of the world, assisting them to adapt to their new geographies and helping them resume their journalistic work. The association firmly believes journalism is a profession of conscience, and freedom of speech is the cornerstone of a civil society. AOHKMP is committed to defending press freedom and monitoring its condition in Hong Kong.
AOHKMP will host “Repower HKers”, a two-day event on 11 and 12 June 2022 at the Global Academy in Hayes, London. Our aim is to bring new momentum to the community of overseas Hongkongers and forge Hong Kong civil society overseas.
Activities include seven forums on “Rebuilding Hong Kong Civil Society Overseas” supported by Hong Kong Watch, and a Hong Kong Fair. The two-day event is sponsored by HK Press ON, the Toronto-based HongKonger Station and the Victoria Harbour Group (UK) Limited.
Hong Kong media professionals overseas, academics and social media opinion leaders will participate in the seven forums which will be broadcast live in the UK, Canada, the US, Australia and Taiwan simultaneously. The forums will discuss topics including: a roundup of the process for legislating on Article 23 of Hong Kong’s Basic Law, the impact of cybersecurity legislation on press freedom, crackdown on Hong Kong civil society: what is left, challenges and opportunities for the Hong Kong diaspora, passing on Hong Kong cultural heritage, prospects for the Hong Kong diaspora/communities overseas.
The Hong Kong Fair will showcase protest artwork and a range of stalls run by Hongkongers. Activities are suitable for adults and children. It is a great opportunity for Hongkongers in the UK to reassemble and reminisce in Hong Kong nostalgia, relieve Hong Kong flavours, pass on Hong Kong culture.
